Who We Are
Severn Fibreglass was founded in 2020, however, our story goes back much further than that.
Ben Platts, the founder of Severn Fibreglass, started life in the GRP trade back in 1999, in the days you were only considered experienced after 2 years in the trade, and even then you were viewed as a relative novice for at least another 3 years! Unfortunately, the modern era has seen material manufacturers teach a crash course, sometimes as short as 2 hours, to contractors, the contractor is then given a certificate and they’re off out into the world of fibreglass roofing! Needless to say, we have to fix many roofs that have been laid by inexperienced contractors.
After many years in the composite industry, Ben decided it was time for a change and embarked on a 6 year law degree with the Open University.
In an attempt to boost his C.V, Ben started a business making dartboard light surrounds, the Aurora Halo. The surround was very popular selling globally to 52 countries and became the blue print for many of it’s predecessors.
The amount of time and effort that was taken up by the business venture resulted in a drop off in the standard of marks being achieved in the law degree, this led Ben to close the business in 2017 and concentrate on his law degree. The decision was vindicated with Ben achieving a 2:1 in law and even winning an award for his outstanding contribution to social justice during his time volunteering for the Citizens Advice Bureau. After graduation in 2019 Ben started the Legal Practice Course and Masters degree with the University of Law. However, the universe had other ideas!
Covid 19 resulted in the end of Ben’s aspirations to become a solicitor, with all the law firms Ben had applied to emailing to inform him they were cancelling trainee recruitment until further notice. this led Ben to re-think his career path and Severn Fibreglass born.
Ben decided to do what he did best with the help of a few trusted colleges, but this time for his own company. Severn Fibreglass quickly gained a reputation for excellence and 5 years on is regarded by many as the benchmark in fibreglass roofing.
2024 saw the company become limited and the development of the Severn Fibreglass garden room, an innovative product that allows a traditional style garden room with the advantages that come with the exterior being one seamless layer of GRP, eliminating the need for treatment of wooden cladding and the shrinkage of composite cladding all while giving a beautiful finish.
The latest creation from Severn fibreglass is the Bourbon dartboard light surround. this is a repurposed bourbon barrel, grp lined for strength and longevity. the bourbon really encapsulates the company ethos of Severn Fibreglass, this product is built to last! made from oak, steel and fibreglass, the surround will last as long as Severn fibreglass roof if treated properly.
Severn Fibreglass are based in Bewdley, Worcestershire and take a keen interest in their local area, supporting the carnival, the friends of the Maypole campaign and the sponsorship of Luke Woodhouse, a PDC professional who plays in many of the biggest tournaments in darts.
Moving forward, Severn Fibreglass will be doing more composite moulding work alongside the roofing and pond installations. We will also be producing pre-made roofs to make life easier for builders and to keep us busy on rainy days!
